Why income protection matters
Your income is your most valuable asset. Income protection pays you a regular replacement income if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury — helping you keep paying the mortgage, bills and everyday costs while you recover.
Replace lost income
Receive a regular tax-relieved benefit — typically up to 75% of your earnings — if you can’t work.

What the calculator is telling you
The figures are indicative — a real quote depends on your age, occupation, health and the insurer. But the building blocks are the same for everyone:
Income protection calculator FAQs
How is income protection calculated?
It's based on the income you want to replace — up to 75% of your earnings — your chosen deferred period, and your age, occupation and health. The calculator gives an indicative premium; a full quote confirms it after underwriting.
How much of my income can I protect?
Up to 75% of your gross earnings, less any State Illness Benefit or other cover, subject to the insurer's maximum yearly benefit.
What is a deferred period?
It's the waiting time between becoming unable to work and your benefit starting — commonly 4, 8, 13, 26 or 52 weeks. A longer deferred period lowers your premium.
Can I claim tax relief on income protection?
Yes. You can claim relief at your marginal rate — 20% or 40% — on premiums up to 10% of your total income, for a Revenue-approved policy.
How much does income protection cost?
It depends on your age, occupation, the cover amount and the deferred period. Use the calculator for an estimate, then we compare the whole market for the best price.
Are the calculator figures a guarantee?
No — they're indicative. Your actual premium is confirmed after underwriting, when the insurer reviews your health and occupation.
Is income protection worth it if I'm self-employed?
Often, yes. Self-employed people usually have no employer sick pay and limited State support, so replacing your income matters even more.
