What Aviva mortgage protection includes

Aviva mortgage protection pays the balance of your mortgage to your lender if you die, or if your partner dies on a joint policy. The sum insured starts at your loan amount and falls as you repay your mortgage.

12 months terminal illness benefit applies if life expectancy is under 12 months
€5,000 or 10% of the sum insured, if lower, for each child’s life cover
Second opinion Best Doctors medical opinion included at no extra cost
  • Single, joint or dual cover, for one borrower or a couple.
  • Optional specified illness cover, which pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a listed illness. The illnesses are set out in Aviva’s Specified Illness Definitions Guide.
  • Terminal illness benefit: life cover is paid if life expectancy is less than 12 months, confirmed by a consultant and Aviva’s Chief Medical Officer.
  • Children’s cover: each child is covered for the lower of €5,000 or 10% of the sum insured, and only one claim is paid per child.
  • Aviva Care: a Best Doctors second medical opinion is included from the first day of cover, alongside support services such as a Digital GP and bereavement support. Aviva says these services are not regulated and can be withdrawn with at least 30 days’ notice.
  • An optional conversion option is available as an extra, which increases the price.

Single, joint or dual cover

The right basis depends on whether one or both of you are named on the mortgage.

Single

Protects one person. The payout normally goes straight to your lender to clear the mortgage.

Joint

Protects two people and pays out once, usually when the first person dies. Cover then ends.

Dual

Protects two people and can pay out twice, once on each person’s death.

Specified illness cover and options

Aviva offers optional extras that increase your premium. Here is what to know about each:

  • Specified illness cover pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a listed illness. Whether a diagnosis qualifies depends on the policy definition.
  • A conversion option is available as an extra and increases the price.
  • Aviva says premiums stay fixed for the policy term unless you change the policy.
  • Many common conditions, such as asthma, high blood pressure or anxiety, can be accepted on standard terms, although each application is assessed individually.

We confirm the exact list of illnesses and payment amounts from Aviva’s policy documents before you apply.

Is Aviva the right fit?

Worth a closer look if

You want a second medical opinion service included, children’s cover built in, or the choice between joint and dual cover for a couple. Aviva also states that many common health conditions, such as asthma or high blood pressure, can be accepted on standard terms.

Check before you decide

Specified illness cover and the conversion option cost extra. Aviva’s support services are not regulated and can be withdrawn with 30 days’ notice. Aviva’s public pages do not give term and age limits for mortgage protection, so we confirm those from the policy documents and compare the price with other providers.

Frequently asked questions

What does Aviva mortgage protection pay out?

It pays the balance of your mortgage to your lender if you die, or if your partner dies on a joint policy. The sum insured starts at your loan amount and falls as you repay.

What is the difference between joint and dual cover?

Joint cover protects two people and pays out once, usually when the first person dies, after which cover ends. Dual cover protects two people and can pay out twice, once on each person’s death.

Can I add specified illness cover?

Yes. Specified illness cover is an optional add-on that pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a listed illness. The illnesses are defined in Aviva’s Specified Illness Definitions Guide, and the add-on increases your premium.

Does Aviva cover children?

Yes. Each child is covered for the lower of €5,000 or 10% of the sum insured, and only one claim is paid per child, however many plans you hold.

What is Aviva Care?

Aviva Care includes a Best Doctors second medical opinion from the first day of cover, plus support services such as a Digital GP and bereavement support. Aviva says these services are not regulated and can be withdrawn with at least 30 days’ notice.

Can I get mortgage protection with a pre-existing condition?

Often, yes. Aviva says many common conditions, such as asthma, high blood pressure or anxiety, can be accepted on standard terms or with minor adjustments. Each application is assessed individually, and the outcome can be standard terms, a higher premium, a postponement or a decline. Give full details when you apply, because leaving something out can delay or stop a claim being paid.
